John Guerin

This legendary studio drummer has played in just about every genre of music, having worked with Frank Sinatra, Thelonious Monk, Frank Zappa, Madonna, Elvis Presley, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Barbara Streisand, Art Garfunkel, Seals and Crofts, The Byrds, Bonnie Raitt, Patti LaBelle, Quincy Jones, Patrick Williams-- and that just scratches the surface of his vast and diverse discography. Starting out as a bebop jazz drummer in the 60's, Guerin became one of the pioneer drummers of the jazz-rock (later known as fusion) genre in the 70's. He helped define the early fusion drum sound by seamlessly integrating elements of jazz in a rock context with his single-headed concert toms, tasty fills, displaced accents, frequent playing of 3/4 over 4/4 time, and an uncanny sense of groove and feel. It is Guerin's sound that inspired me to start drumming. Guerin co-founded "The LA Express", a popular fusion group of the 70's with saxophonist Tom Scott, bassist Max Bennett, Larry Carlton on guitar, and Joe Sample on piano. You've probably heard his drumming on old TV show themes such as the 70's "Bob Newhart Show", "Hawaii 5-0", and "Laverne & Shirley", in addition to literally hundreds of uncredited TV and movie gigs. A truly down-to-earth guy, after I sucessfully persuaded "Modern Drummer" magazine to do an article on him (which they published in January, 1999) I sent him an email, and received a friendly response with an offer to meet up for a drum lesson if I was ever in the area! Guerin was active on the West-Coast jazz scene, playing with the trios of Roger Kellaway and Mike Melvoin, until his sudden passing in January of 2004, when the world lost one of its most talented musicians. Adrienne Shelly

This independent film actress initially caught my eye in Hal Hartley's film "Trust". Her careful career choices, understated yet intensely powerful acting, and the fact that she has remained true to her roots make her a rarity in the entertainment industry. Shelly refused several primetime Hollywood television and movie offers in order to remain in New York to continue writing, directing, and acting in theater and independent films. She marked her writing and directorial debut in the impressive and quirky film "Sudden Manhattan", in which she also starred. This film was followed by "I'll Take You There", which she also wrote, directed, and starred in. While Hal Hartley's influence is undeniable in her work, Shelly has her own brand of dark comedy and her films stand on their own merit. By 2006, Shelly was an established player in the independent film industry and her latest film, "Waitress", was submitted to the Sundance Film Festival. Tragically, her life was taken in a senseless act of violence in November, 2006. ( Adrienne Shelly Foundation , MovieMaker Interview, and IMDB Entry)
Rod Serling

Most people recognize Rod Serling from "The Twilight Zone", a revolutionary TV series produced during the Golden Age of Television in which Serling challenged the medium to reach for loftier artistic goals and to examine controversial issues considered off-limits at the time. Serling's highly stylistic writing and thought-provoking social commentary produced one of the most artistic, intelligent television series to date. A former paratrooper and Golden Gloves Boxer, Serling was a brilliant writer recognized long before this series for his scripts for the TV series "Patterns" and the movie "Requiem for a Heavyweight". After "The Twilight Zone" was cancelled, he went on to the forgettable "Night Gallery" TV series and co-wrote the screenplay for the original "Planet of the Apes". Controversial and outspoken on and off the screen, Serling wrote convincing essays and delivered powerful speeches on everything from the loyalty oath to Vietnam.
